In the division of property during a divorce, it’s doubtful that you will get everything so be prepared to decide what things you’re willing to give up.

Bear in mind that it’s not necessarily about only money.  For example, you could decide to give up the collection of gold coins you had your eye on if it means getting the 1966 Chevy Nova parked in the garage, even though it’s worth only half as much. Why? Maybe the car was a graduation gift and you’ve always treasured it because of the great sentimental value.

Trying to turn the division of property into a competition to see who gets the highest dollar amount could be satisfying for the ego, but may not serve you well in the long run. When you place a value on something in a divorce do so wisely, taking all factors, both present and future,  into consideration.
