When a life milestone occurs what better way to commemorate it than with a party or gathering of friends and family. Weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, graduations. While most are upbeat, this may not be always be the case-- just look at funerals.
Now with the increase in divorces in modern society, people have begun to celebrate this life event with a party too. Whether you want to rejoice in your new-found single life or cheer about being free from your ex, the end of a divorce may be something to celebrate after all, or at least make a little happier. Maybe you have a friend who could use a little cheering up after his/her nasty divorce. Think of it as fresh start and a chance to move forward.
How to throw a divorce party
Who to Invite
The point of the party is to laugh. After all those months of fighting, maybe that it exactly what you or your friend needs. Invite your single friends or other divorcees. It may be a good idea to steer clear of your aunt Betty and her judgmental comments or your newlywed friend from work. This may even be best as a “girls' night” or “bros only” event with no phones (regrettable pictures, videos, or texts) allowed as the night goes on.
Setting
Avoid a romantic setting or anything that could have some romantic significance for the new divorcee. Fun and creative decorations can help. (“Just Divorced” banner, balloons, etc…) You may want to avoid somewhere public as well to bypass any nosy onlookers.
Food and Drinks
As far as food is concerned, a little indulgence may be exactly what you want. If cheese or chocolate is a guilty pleasure, it may be time for some fondue. You do not need a full meal but a variety of tasty appetizers could be perfect. Pizza is always an easy fix as well. A crazy cake could be the final touch to add to the fun. Do not skimp on the alcohol or ask friends to bring some as well to avoid a liquor run. (Do not drink and drive!)
Entertainment
Rock out to some old dance music or sing along with those empowering songs like “Stronger” by Britney Spears. Your divorce party probably doesn’t need sappy breakup songs or Céline Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” If you think games or other activities are appropriate, go for it. Burn the wedding certificate. Drink anytime someone says, “divorce.” Get creative.
